Too Much Stuff, Not Enough Space?
Share
Let’s face it, you might have a bit more stuff than you’d care to admit. I’ve been there. Sometimes our homes are bursting at the seams. From overflowing closets to drawers that won’t shut anymore, it can be tough to figure out where everything should go—especially when you’re emotionally attached to that extra set of plates you only use on Thanksgiving (…and maybe not even then).
So how do you manage when you have too much stuff and not enough space? I’ve got you covered with some tips and tricks that will help you regain control of your home.
1. Declutter Like You’re Moving
The first step is to declutter—there’s no way around it. No matter how clever the storage hacks are, if you have more stuff than your space can handle, you’re still going to feel overwhelmed. Plus, let’s be honest, if you can’t see it, you won’t use it! So, before diving into any organizing solutions, focus on getting rid of the things you no longer need or use. It’s time to let go and create space for what really matters—because no amount of bins or shelves can fix a space that’s packed to the brim.
One way to trick yourself into making more space is to pretend you’re moving. You wouldn’t pack up five pairs of scissors, would you? Probably not. (And if you would, I have questions!) But when you go through your things with a “moving day” mindset, it’s easier to decide what’s worth keeping and what’s taking up valuable space.
Focus on one room or area at a time and ask yourself: “If I had to pack this up tomorrow, would I still bring it with me?” If the answer is “no,” it’s time to donate, sell, or throw it away. Bonus points if you can make some extra cash selling those things you haven’t used in five years.
2. Go Vertical (Your Walls Are Lonely!)
When it feels like your floor space has given up on you, it’s time to look up. Wall-mounted shelves and hooks are your best friends when you’re trying to make more room in a small space. Whether it’s for your kitchen gadgets or bathroom essentials, vertical storage will save your sanity.
Insert a shelf or two in your kitchen or try mounting hooks in the entryway for coats and bags!

3. Furniture with Secret Powers (AKA Storage)
Why settle for furniture that only serves one purpose? Extra space is a great thing. These days, it’s all about multi-functional furniture—like ottomans that double as storage, coffee tables with hidden compartments, or beds with built-in drawers underneath.
These storage wonders give you extra room to tuck away blankets, board games or seasonal clothing, while keeping everything neat and organized. Be mindful that it’s easier to accumulate clutter in storage spaces that are out of sight, which is why it’s so important to declutter first and only have items that serve you.

4. Bins, Bins, and More Bins!
Let me introduce you to your new best friend: bins. Bins are perfect for organizing everything from kids’ toys to kitchen supplies.
Clear bins are great because you can actually see what’s inside (no more digging through piles of mystery items). And for smaller spaces, stackable bins are a lifesaver—they maximize vertical space and give you room to breathe again. Just don’t forget to label them… you’ll thank me later.

5. Decluttering Isn’t About Perfection
Remember that organizing isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating a space that works for you. Maybe you’ll never have a spotless house that looks like it’s straight out of a magazine, but that’s okay! The goal here is to make your home feel functional and comfortable for your everyday life, not to make it look picture-perfect.
If your closet still has a few extra sweaters but you’ve made space for everything else, that’s a win in my book. Give yourself a pat on the back—you’re doing great!
